Ten Four: Poems, Translations, Variations

This limited edition chapbook of Poems, Variations, and Translations was designed and produced by The OS in conjunction with Jerome Rothenberg and Ariel Resnikoff’s October 4th, 2015 “Fantasy Reading” at Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. The title, Ten Four, is a temporal marker, an anagram of fortune, and a nod to the radio ten-code for understanding another’s transmission, an apt metaphor for a volume with a lineage in translations and variations.

The Likht Variations were first published on Wave Composition and will appear again in Rothenberg’s forthcoming A Field on Mars: Poem 2000-2015, to be publishing in simultaneous English and French editions by Presses Universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. “The Hotel Monopol” will also appear in A Field On Mars.

The excerpt from Mikhl Likht’s long modern Yiddish poem, “Procession,” was translated by Resnikoff and Stephen Ross.

Ariel Resnikoff is a poet, translator and editor. His most recent works include the chapbook Between Shades (Materialist Press, 2014) ​and ​the collaborative pamphlet Ten Four: Poems, Translations, Variations (The Operating System, 2015) with Jerome Rothenberg. His​​ poetry, essays​ ​and​ ​translations have appeared or are forthcoming in a number of journals and magazines, including The Wolf Magazine for Poetry, Eleven Eleven,​ White Wall Review,​ Jacket2 ​and​ ​Mantis, among others. ​With Stephen Ross, he is at work on the first full-length translation and critical edition of Mikhl Likht’s Yiddish modernist long poem, Protsesiyes (Processions). ​Ariel is an editor-at-large of Global Modernists on Modernism: A​ Sourcebook ​(forthcoming Bloomsbury, 2017) and curates the “Multilingual Poetics” reading/talk series at Kelly Writers House. He has studied multilingual diaspora writing at the University of California in Santa Cruz, McGill University, the University of Oxford, and independently in more than twenty countries over the past ten years. He is currently reading for a PhD in comparative literature at the University of Pennsylvania and lives with his wife, Rivka Weinstock, in the Cedar Park neighborhood of West Philadelphia.

Jerome Rothenberg is an internationally celebrated poet, translator, anthologist, and performer with over ninety books of poetry and twelve large assemblages of traditional and avant-garde poetry such as Technicians of the Sacred and Poems for the Millennium. Recent books of poetry include A Field on Mars (in English and French), The President of Desolation, The Mystery of False Attachments, A Book of Infernos, and Eye of Witness: A Jerome Rothenberg Reader. He is currently assembling a transnational anthology of North and South American poetry "from origins to present,” scheduled for publication by the University of California Press.

Mikhl Likht (1893-1953) was a Yiddish American poet, critic & translator, whose radical masterwork, Protsesiyes (Processions), accompanies & may even prefigure the long-poem experiments of English language masters like Pound, Williams, Loy & Zukofsky, with all of whom he was in contact. The excerpt from “Procession: V,” published here, is part of an ongoing effort by Merle Bachman, Stephen Ross, Jerome Rothenberg & Ariel Resnikoff to bring Likht’s Yiddish modernist long poem into English. A complete translation of Processions by Resnikoff & Ross is currently in the works.

Elæ Moss is a multimodal artist-researcher, curator, designer, and educator.
