AWESOME CREATORS :: THEATRE :: THE (ANYTHING BUT) BASiC THEATRE PROJECT INSPIRES AND SHINES

Especially once you learn that its humble misnomer stands for “Bringing Art and Social Change into Collaboration,” it should come as no surprise that not long after meeting its charismatic, driven artistic director, Zi Alikhan, I invited the BASiC Theatre Project to be Exit Strata’s first community partner focusing on theatrical production.

Describing itself as “a New York City-based theatre company dedicated to making art that is a catalyst for social change,” BASiC has already proved itself to be a groundbreaking, challenging, and innovative voice in the vast (and often byzantine) landscape of contemporary theatre production unique to our metropolis.

If you watch the above video, and see these young artists adding their voices to “I am BASiC” — it might sound a little like our “I am Exit Strata” campaign — an uncanny yet unsurprising coincidence, given the genuine alignment of our purpose and mission. We are so thrilled to introduce you to this talented company, and invite you to join us for their exciting upcoming season. We are B.A.S.i.C., after all.

True to Exit Strata’s mission, the Project sees its art form as a tool for engagement and empowerment of not only player/performer, but all participants — building community with organizations and audiences, sustaining and inviting dialogue around quotidian experience and hot button issues, seeking out and encouraging new voices.

Fresh off a successful run of Moises Kaufman’s “Gross Indecency: the Three Trials of Oscar Wilde,” at CAP21, beginning January 16th, 2013 BASiC presents “The Mistakes Madeline Made,” a dark comedy by Elizabeth Meriwether (creator of Fox’s “New Girl”).

“The Mistakes Madeline Made” is an honest yet eccentric look into figuring out the next step once you’ve graduated from college in post-9/11 America. The story follows twenty-something Edna as she copes with the loss of her brother surrounded by the beast that is New York City; horrible bosses, sleeping with “poets,” and kindergartners with bigger net worths than your whole family. But more than that, it is a play about love and dirty people, loss and mending as part of a generation that has grown up entirely in the presence of war. Edna’s plan of attack – no more bathing.
“Madeline” is the first offering in BASiC’s yearlong initiative, The NEW War Plays. The series will examine post-9/11 America’s response to and involvement in war through performance. The series begins with “Madeline,” followed by a new documentary play dissecting the LGBT military experience before and after DADT, and finishes with an epic new production of Brecht’s “Mother Courage.”
The cast of “Madeline” features Bryan Langlitz (Broadway’s Memphis), Hannah Whitney (NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation), Caitlin Hargraves, Anthony Jackson and Samuel Barickman.
“The Mistakes Madeline Made” performs Wednesday, Jan. 16 to Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at the Theater at the 14th Street Y (344 E 14th St, btwn 1st and 2nd Aves).
Showtimes are Wednesday to Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 7 p.m.
