NYC Readings Roundup, March 4-10
Editor’s note: welcome to our new weekly series, the Readings Roundup! It’s long been a pipedream of ours to revive the NYC Poetry Calendar (started in 1977 by Bob Holman), to provide for the community here a true and cohesive overview of the vibrant scene that seems to birth a new event every day. How does a poet new to New York or just new to the readings landscape figure out where to go, what these different events and organizations represent and offer?
We have a habit of biting off more than we can chew, so even though we have an overwhelmingly robust spreadsheet we’re working on making into an interactive page on the site, in future, we decided not to wait. In the meanwhile, we’ll start small — featuring in particular long running events and venues, making sure always to keep a healthy balance between styles and associations. We are judgement free and love filled, we’re just excited people are writing, reading, and sharing this important form. Come out!
This week, we’ll offer a second special edition, Readings Roundup :: AWP BOSTON 2013 Edition. Look for it tomorrow for suggestions on panels, readings and other events on and offsite!

Saturn Series Poetry @ Revival Bar

Saturn Series Poetry is a writers’ open mic every Monday night. We are in our 19th year of bringing poetry & prose to the neighborhood in NYC. Our host announces each open mic reader for their 3 to 5 minutes on stage with the mic. There are usually two features who each have 15 to 20 minutes to perform. This is not a slam, it is simply great poetry, prose and sometimes a song or two in a great listening room. The styles are varied with poets, playwrights, screenwriters and novelists. We look forward to hearing your work. Features are generally booked from those who participate in the reading. Please be welcome.
Monday Night Poetry: David Lehman & James Kimbrell @ KGB Bar
DAVID LEHMAN is the author of many collections of poems, including Yeshiva Boys (Scriber, 2011), When a Woman Loves a Man (Scribner, 2005), Jim and Dave Defeat the Masked Man (with James Cummins, Soft Skull Press, 2005), and The Evening Sun (2002). Among his books of non-fiction are A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs (Shocken Books, 2009) and The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets (Doubleday, 1998), which was named a “Book to Remember 1999” by the New York Public Library. He edited The Oxford Book of American Poetry (Oxford University Press, 2006), and is the series editor of The Best American Poetry. He is on the core faculty of the graduate writing programs at the New School and New York University. He lives in New York City.
JAMES KIMBRELL is the author of The Gatehouse Heaven (1998), which was chosen by poet Charles Wright for the Kathryn A. Morton Prize from Sarabande Books, and My Psychic (2006). He and artist Yu Jung-yul co-translated the collection Three Poets of Modern Korea: Yi Sang, Hahm Dong-Seon, and Choi Young-Mi (2002). His poems, reviews and translations have appeared in magazines and anthologies such as Poetry, Field, Fence, The Nation, Prairie Schooner, The Boston Book Review, American Poetry: The Next Generation (Carnegie Mellon University Press) and The Bread Loaf Anthology of New American Poets (University Press of New England). Kimbrell’s plaudits include a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowship, a Ruth Lilly Prize, and a Whiting Writers’ Award. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, he is currently on faculty at the MFA program at Florida St. University.

Laura Elrick’s Propagation is recently out from Kenning Editions (December, 2012). She lives in Brooklyn.
Cecilia Vicuña is a poet, visual artist and filmmaker born in Santiago de Chile. The author of twenty poetry books, she exhibits and performs widely in Europe, Latin America and the United States.

Featuring Susan Gevirtz & Trish Salah
Susan Gevirtz’s books include AERODROME ORION & Starry Messenger (Kelsey Street Press, 2010), BROADCAST (Trafficker, 2009) and Thrall (Post Apollo, 2007). Coming Events (Collected Writings) is forthcoming from Nightboat Press. Gevirtz has co-organized the annual Paros Symposium with Greek poet Siarita Kouka for eight years.
Trish Salah’s writing has recently appeared in The Volta/Evening Will Come, Troubling the Line, The Cordite Poetry Review, Selling Sex and Féminismes Électriques. She is the author of Wanting in Arabic (TSAR, 2002). Salah lectures at the University of Toronto and researches the emergence of transsexual and transgender minority literatures.
